Choices

From the time my 3 kids were young, they heard my husband and I say to them “it’s all about the choices you make.” They probably got tired of hearing that, but it is very true. From the friends you choose, to the food you eat, to the games you play, to the time you invest in your relationship with God. The list goes on. You can make choices that promote a healthy well-being in body, mind and spirit or you can do things that mark the road to stress and illness

Now that you are in college, many of you are away from home for the first time. FREEDOM!! It’s a time for learning new things and exploring new experiences. However, it’s also a time for being wise about and responsible for the things you learn and explore.

All decisions have consequences. Coming from a health perspective, how much you sleep, what you eat, if you are a couch potato, etc. can set the tone for your physical and mental well-being for the rest of your life. Many choices set you up for a life of wellness or chronic disease.

Some choices you will make:

Should I go to bed at 11 or stay up till 2?
Should I go to class today?
Should I join a club or play intramural sports?
Should I start my paper today?
Should I cheat on that exam?
Should I hang out with that person?
Should I go to that party?
Should I spend that 10 bucks?
Should I call my mom/dad and let them know how I am doing?
Should I reach out to that person who appears to be a loner?
Should I go to church?
Should I start/end my day with scripture/prayer?

The first step to true wellness? Your relationship with God! He is the foundation to all aspects of health.

Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way. (Colossians 3:17 The Message)     

So, as you enter these first days of college life or, if you are a returning or transfer student, the beginning of a new school year, consider your choices. Choose well, be well.

FLU PREVENTION 101

Colds, strep and flu are here! Follow these basic steps to help avoid getting and passing these bugs: - Clean Your Hands! Hand sanitizer or soap & water. -Clean high touch surfaces with antibacterial products. -Eat a Balanced Diet! Add vitamin C, zinc, immune boosters. -Drink Water! 8 glasses a day. -Cover your Coughs and Sneezes—into the bend of your arm. -Get Plenty of Sleep! -Stay out of class/work if you have a Fever. Return when you have been Fever-Free for 24 hours. -Treat symptoms: acetaminophen or ibuprofen, decongestants, cough suppressants, chicken soup . -See a Dr. if you have a fever 101 or higher, if you can’t keep anything down or if your symptoms are not gradually improving. - Get A FLU SHOT!
